I bid Leo a quick goodbye before getting out of the car. After he drove off, I headed inside. The last thing I expected was for my dad to be snoozing in the living room with the light at its dimmest setting. He even had the television on, but it was muted, likely so it wouldn’t bother him as he slept.

“Dad?” I called out.

He jerked upright in his chair, eyes darting around the room until he saw me.

“Star, when did you get in?”

“Just now,” I said. “Dad, did you wait down here for me all night?”

Dad sighed. “Yes, but don’t get annoyed with me. I was worried and wanted to make sure you got home safely.”

How is he going to do that by falling asleep?

Onyx, hush.

“I’m sorry you fell asleep in the chair. Your living room chair is not comfortable at all.”

Dad shrugged. “I know. It’s about time I got a new one, but I still have time.”

For over three years, Mom had been trying to get Dad to get rid of that chair. She said that it was falling apart with springs sticking out and stains that couldn’t be identified anymore. I agreed with Mom, trying to get Dad to toss it out, but Dad was stubborn.

Right before Mom went missing, Dad had ordered a new chair. He canceled it soon after and hadn’t made any attempt to get a new one. I didn’t want to bring it up because Dad was hurting. The fact that he canceled a chair he had already purchased had to do with Mom missing.

While Dad didn’t say as much, I knew that was the truth.

“Dad, why don’t you go up to bed? You want to be well-rested when you go to The Magical Cupcake tomorrow.”

He flashed me a smile. “Hey, your dear old dad will be fine. I might be getting up there in age, but I can keep up with you all.”

“Dad, please. Will you go upstairs and sleep in your nice, comfy bed for me?”

Dad sighed again. “All right, I’ll do it for you, Star. Good night and don’t stay up too late yourself.”

“I won’t Dad, I promise.”

I had no intention of staying up late. It was important to get straight to bed and talk with Victor Rivera tomorrow.

Do you think Victor is going to deny everything?

Onyx nodded. Of course. Why would he admit to being there? That would put him at the murder scene. It doesn’t matter if we have magical proof.

Magical proof isn’t enough to bring him to justice, Onyx. We need proof mortals can use in a court of law.

You know, Starla, if he committed a magical crime then the magical tribunal would take care of Victor Rivera, but Harvey was killed by mortal means.

I blinked. Does that mean he’d have to be killed by a spell for them to get involved?

Yes, unfortunately.

Even now there were still things I was learning about the magical community. All the murders in Moonberry I had helped solve were based on magic, but still had mortal causes, meaning they fell under mortal authority.
